Rating: - Dead Nigger Storage
One thing is for sure, this film certainly knows how to offend the right people -- And that's why it's so great. Quentin Tarantino's PULP FICTION is a rare masterpiece that is unlikely to be repeated by him, or his imitators. And believe me, many have tried, with varying levels of success. Tarantino pulls out all of the stops with Pulp Fiction -- stupendous dialogue, discourses on the meaning of life, flash-backs, weird camera angles, brutal torture and fascinating people. These extended sequences of talking are like a trademark, providing insights into the characters and lulls between the bouts of frenetic violence, which occur in everything that this director touches. However, true to the theme of pulp magazines, these linked stories have no connection with reality and the actors, realising this, play their parts with gusto. It seems churlish to pick Travolta and Jackson as the stars, since everyone is convincing in their portrayals, but these two are great foils to each other and provide an intriguing core to the movie. Combined with a superb soundtrack, which both fits into the action and provides a setting for it, the effect is akin to a 154-minute roller-coaster ride; exhilarating but exhausting. Now I'm certain that everyone reading this review has seen Pulp Fiction but that doesn't matter. See it again. Now.
Rating: - Wonderfully quotable small talk! Improves w/ each watching
"Pulp Fiction" is just a classic! This movie has some of the best dialogue of any movie I've ever seen: Discussions about how intimate a foot massage is, $5 milkshakes, the differences between fast food in Amsterdam, Paris and the U.S., the art of body piercing, appreciation of good coffee, etc. There's no way to explain WHY these topics are interesting. "Pulp Fiction" just makes them interesting--trust me.The movie essentially follows four stories: a romantically involved couple who also are hold-up artists, two hitmen, Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta) on a job, Vincent's "date" with his boss's wife (Uma Thurman), and a boxer (Bruce Willis) who is paid to take a fall. These seemingly unrelated story lines eventually weave back together, to a certain extent, and each is fascinating. Quentin Tarantino's decision to follow a non-linear plot also adds to the movie's interest. Characters we see killed in a previous scene reappear later--because "later" is really earlier, chronologically. Ultmately, the movie comes full circle, and it's quite a fun ride. For an interesting perspective on the movie, watch for the way the power shifts. At any given time, there's usually one or two characters with power--and how the power shifts and who winds up with the power is fascinating. This is especially true during Jules and Vincent's ride after their hit, their visit to Tarantino, a very put-out host and their encounter with Harvey Keitel, the ultimate problem solver.
Rating: - An American Classic
After scoring a critical indie hit with Reservoir Dogs, writer/director Quentin Tarantino stunned moviegoers with 1994's Pulp Fiction. Tarantino assembled one of the finest casts ever envisioned, and bracnhes the film into seperate yet interwoven stories; all of which have an underlying theme just as Tarantino's other films have (Reservoir Dogs was honor among thieves, Jackie Brown dealt with survival, and Pulp Fiction dealt with redemption), and Pulp Fiction became an international hit for Tarantino and Miramax Films, while resurrecting John Travolta's career and making Samuel L. Jackson a household name. The ensemble cast also includes Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Maria de Medeiros, Ving Rhames, Eric Stoltz, Rosanna Arquette, Christopher Walken, Bruce Willis, Phil LaMar, Julia Sweeney, Peter Greene, Steve Buscemi, and Tarantino himself. Samuel L. Jackson nearly steals the entire film (he was robbed of his Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for this), and you can't help but feel for some of the characters. Travolta was nominated for Best Actor and the film was up for Best Picture among other nominations. This new DVD Collector's Edition is a great buy, but if you already have the older edition of Pulp Fiction on DVD there's no need to run out and buy this, the extra's really aren't that special to warrant a second purchase of the film. All in all, Pulp Fiction is a modern day American classic that will make you laugh your head off while your not asking yourself "Did I just see (or hear) that?!".
