Average Rating:
Rating: - Unbelievable
These are the musicians that dominated our lives with their "soulful jazz" recordings while supporting the singing legends. Wonderfully illustrated. Not actors (while a couple could be). Musicians. Emotions are felt while listening to their stories and their music. Nothing intended to be taken away from technicians, engineers, singing artists or the janitor who cleaned and polished the floors. (Perhaps those feeling left out can now do their own documentary as - once again - the Funk Brothers have opened the doors.) After having seen this movie twice, having the opportunity in attending a recent performance and now OWNING the DVD I totally understand why Motown never released hits at the same pace as when the Snake Pit was jamming. Just as with the music, my movie collection would not be complete without this one. I am hoping for another movie from these greats. Another CD with anyone singer or an instrumental? Good for the Funk Brothers.
Rating: - Wonderful and Yet,,,Terribly Sad
Being in the music business I can understand the pain that these incredible musicians must have felt. The Funk Bros were probably the Best Studio Band in HISTORY! It hurt to watch that movie, what a tragedy it was to see those great musicians die 1 by 1 yet not be recognized. Where was Motown in this movie? where was the support? These gentleman DESERVE RESPECT and a Large Scale production must be created on their legacy! Can you imagine the publishing that is truly due to them? They should have and still should be Living Plush! It was painful to watch the few FB's left working in hotel lounges, they should still be putting their magic on today's hit records. One thing to give thanks for, there Is a God and What goes around Comes Around! God Bless The Funk Brothers and Shame on ANY Living Motown Legend that earned money using the sevices of the Funk Brothers Yet did not support the documentary. Shame on you!
Rating: - For those who questioned why.......
I read a few reviewers questioning why the production didn't involve the original singers to sing the songs. Please note that this documentary is about Funk Brothers. By using contemporary singers to accompany the original rhythm section, the film proves to the viewers how Motown music is in it's musicians, especially the rhythm section. Also if Diana, Stevie, or Smokey would get on stage to sing a song or two, they'd definitely demand star treatment. This will DEFEAT THE PURPOSE.For those who demand to know more about The Temps, Tops, Supremes, and Miracles etc., please either read their autobiographies, watch made-for-TV movies, or listen to their box sets. This movie is about the Funk Brothers, not Motown singers. This film is to celebrate the brothers' contribution to American pop music and to finally validate their hard work, creativity, and how they influenced generations of future musicians. If you watched a documentary, at least be aware of the subject matter before you criticize the production.
