Average Rating:
Rating: - A marvelous adaptation of one of the great novels.
This A&E/BBC miniseries is a true masterpiece, bringing Jane Austen's most popular novel to life in a near perfect production. It has everything: authentic Regency Period atmosphere, costumes, settings, a beautiful musical score, excellent performances by a well-chosen cast. Andrew Davis's script does full justice to Austen's original. Colin Firth is excellent as Mr. Darcy, but Jennifer Ehle just takes my breath away with her magnificent performance, which catches every nuance of Elizabeth Bennet's character exactly right in every scene. It is a pleasure to watch all 4 1/2 hours straight through again and again. As a longtime devoted admirer of Jane Austen's works, I am very critical of any movies based upon her novels, but this has to be one of the very best adaptations of any major literary work.
Rating: - AMAZING!!
Wow!! This is just a fabulous adaption of Pride and Prejiduce! The length is a little daunting when you first start out but you come to realize that the length is what makes it great. Unlike other films that have to skip or shorten scenes to fit the 2 hour format this movie doesn't cut any corners. This movie rarely strays from Jane Austen's book. And that is how it should be. The witty talented Austen knew what she was doing. And it is wonderful to see a movie that acknowledges that. The characters both the main and the supporting are perfectly cast. Jennifer Ehle is the most fantastic Lizzy there could ever be. And colin firth is rather dashing as the misunderstood Mr. Darcy. Lizzy's parents and sisters are well represented as are the Bingleys and Mr. Colins absolutely steals the scene whenever he appears with his his ignorant humor. To top it all off the scenery is gorgeous (espacially Pemberly) and the sets seem to come right out of the book. It is best to watch the whole thing at once if you could set aside a Sunday afternoon. You won't be disappointed. As with the book itself I wish I could give this movie 1000 stars.
Rating: - dvd is re-release w/ extras, so hold criticism until then!
This movie is, in a word, amazing. This is my favorite movie EVER, which says a whole lot considering the following two facts: (1) I don't like foreign films, and (2) nor do I like period pieces. That this happens to be BOTH and, somehow, inexplicably, still manages to be my favorite movie of all time says amazing things about it. The acting is splendid, as I can't imagine anyone else playing any of these characters, from Jennifer Ehle's perfect rendition of Elizabeth Bennet to Julia Sawalha's equally perfect interpretation of annoying Lydia Bennet. Yep. Perfect. At over five hours in length, the movie manages to capture the essence of the book, without ever seeming slow or tedious. I'm sure other reviews will give you a more precise summary of the plot, so I'll refrain. What I do want to mention is that the dvd version that is being reviewed is a re-release (not an original release) and, as such, it is NOT YET AVAILABLE. It is my understanding is that this new version will my MUCH BETTER than the previously available version in America. The previous version (the one I own and, I believe, the one others are basing their reviews on) has no DVD extras, the episodes are not seemless (credits run at the end of each episode) and the picture quality is poor at best (it's nothing better than a vhs to dvd transfer--not truly the digitial quality you've come to expect from dvds). This original release is now out-of-print. The new upcoming version, which I am eagerly anticipating, WILL have new dvd features, and I believe will be similar to the version already available in Europe. Accordingly, I think the criticisms aimed at the DVD features are unfair because THAT'S NOT THE VERSION WE'RE REVIEWING. To get a better sense of how this new version's features stand up to expectations, please look at the amazon u.k. site for reviews of the european version. It seems A&E/BBC are fixing the complaints of the original dvd, so this re-release promises to be much better!
