Rating: - Are you a fan? Buy this!
Bottom line: The Simpsons is the funniest, smartest show on television. This is satire at its best! It has a strong cast of characters which is one of the reasons it has survived for so many years. This DVD is a fan's dream, and is loaded with clips, commentary, and of course the groundbreaking first season of shows. A landmark show finally has a fitting DVD set. The early episodes of course aren't quite as sharp in the animation department, as the art and produciton values will continue to grow with each season. The writing is there, however, and its fun seeing how the characters have evolved/grown over time. And hey, these are the classic episodes! I look forward to the release of the rest of the seasons, but for now will enjoy this wonderful set. If you are a fan (and you probably are since you're reading this) this is a must have. This is the kind of set you go buy a DVD player for!
Rating: - Excellent DVD set for an excellent series
Needless to say, The Simpsons is easily the best sitcom of all time, even if it's animated (if you don't like this show, what's wrong with you!?) This series has come a long way, and this DVD set contains the entire first season, plus some interesting bonus features. Early on, the show was more like a standard sitcom, only animated (as opposed to the "off the wall" sort of humor the show uses in the modern age.) These episodes contain noticably lower animation quality than the modern ones, but that doesn't detract from the overall quality. These episodes are all classics, and belong in the collection of every fan. Season One is composed of the following episodes:-Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire: The very first full-length Simpsons episode. Homer gets no Christmas bonus at work, and is forced to take up a part-time job as a mall Santa. Meanwhile, Bart gets a tattoo, and the family is forced to use their Christmas savings to have it removed. Though they are left with virtually no money, Homer and Bart come home on Christmas Eve with a dog, and everyone thinks it's the perfect present. This one's an instant classic. -Bart The Genius: After receiving frequent torment from Martin Prince, the teacher's pet in his class, he gets his revenge by swapping intelligence tests with him. Because Bart supposedly got a high score, he gets to go to a genius school. However, he soon finds himself an outcast and is forced to confess to cheating on the test, and go back to his old school. -Homer's Odyssey: For his frequent incompetence at the power plant, Homer is fired. After nearly committing suicide, he realizes his reason to live is to make the world a safe place. When leading a safety rally in front of the power plant, Mr. Burns offers him a new job - Plant Safety Inspector, which he happily accepts. -There's No Disgrace Like Home: After their poor behavior at the Power Plant picnic, Homer realizes his family is one of the worst in the neighborhood. He pawns off the TV so that he can afford Dr. Marvin Monroe's therapy session. Once there, they are tied into machines with which they can shock each other - one of the most famous classic Simpsons scenes. Afterwards, they get double their money back, due to not being satisfied, and decide to go buy a new TV. -Moaning Lisa: Lisa finds herself depressed and lonely, until she meets Bleeding Gums Murphy, a talented saxophone player. After meeting him she becomes more confident and less depressed. -Call Of The Simpsons: Jealous of a new RV Ned Flanders bought, Homer buys the best one he can afford, which is a piece of junk. Before he knows it he has the family stranded out in the woods. Soon enough Homer is being mistaken for Bigfoot! This episode is a classic - enough said. -The Telltale Head: Bart saws the head off of a statue of the town founder in a desperate attempt to fit in with a group of characters now considered the series bullies, following a lecture from Homer about the importance of being accepted. However, once he does it, he angers them, as well as the rest of the town. -Life On The Fast Lane: After Homer gives Marge a thoughtless gift (a bowling ball that says "Homer" on it,) She goes to the bowling alley alone so Homer can't use it. She begins to fall for her bowling instructor, and soon the two frequently meet. However, when she is on her way to his apartment, she goes down a street full of lovers, and decides to go see Homer at the Power Plant instead. -Homer's Night Out: With Bart's new spy camera, he photographs Homer with an exotic dancer. Homer becomes revered as "the guy from the picture", but Marge throws him out of the house. Finally, he takes Bart to the studio she is performing at, and gives the audience a lecture on how women should never be treated as objects. -The Crepes Of Wrath: After detonating a cherry bomb in a toilet of the school bathroom, Principal Skinner suggests Bart be placed in a foreign exchange progran. He is sent to France and practically becomes a slave to two winemakers. Meanwhile, an Albanian boy is sent to live with the Simpsons, who don't know he is actually a spy. Finally, Bart gets the winemakers arrested, and the Albanian is deported. Bart comes home with gifts, and everyone is happy. -Krusty Gets Busted: Krusty The Clown is accused of robbing the Kwik-E-Mart. Bart, not wanting to lose faith in his hero, looks for another explanation. Soon he becomes convinced it was Sideshow Bob, and proves it on TV by whacking his foot with a hammer. This is the first of many Sideshow Bob episodes, in which he is the main villain. -Bart The General: Tired of getting beaten up by Nelson, Bart asks Grampa for help, who takes him to Herman, the owner of a military antiques store. With his help Bart assembles an army of his friends, who unleash a barrage of water ballons on Nelson. -Some Enchanted Evening: Homer and Marge go out for a night together, leaving the kids with a babysitter. What they don't know is the babysitter is one of the nation's most wanted criminals! After seeing her on TV, Bart and Lisa tie her up, but Homer lets her go, not knowing she was a criminal. That's it for the episodes. However, this DVD has a few bonus features. It's got scripts to three episodes, early character sketches, clips of the show in foreign languages, some unreleased outtakes, and even the complete version of "Goodnight Simpsons", which was the VERY FIRST appearance of the Simpsons, ever (this was the first in a series of Simpsons shorts which aired on the Tracey Ullman show in the late eighties, before the show became its own series.) Unfortunately, as good as these extras are, I wanted more of them. I was hoping to find ALL of the old shorts on here, not just the one. Even if it would have made the set more expensive, having all of the shorts would make this collection considerably better. Still, this is an excellent collection, and certainly worthy of a place in the collection of every Simpsons fan.
