Average Rating:
Rating: - Honor and Horror
The story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry is told in a solid and entertaining movie. The casting is brilliant, including the surprisingly good choice of Matthew Broderick, an actor I'm normally indifferent to, who is utterly believable as the scion of a wealthy Boston family who accepts a commission as Colonel in command of the first black regiment in the Civil War. Rounding out the cast are Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, the two finest actors of ANY color working in Hollywood these days, and Cary Elwes in easily his best performance since The Princess Bride. If there is anything negative to say about this film, it is in the archetypical nature of several of the characters (I do not know how "fictionalized" the indivdual soldiers are) and a bit of, yes, "glorification" of what ultimately was one of the most horrific and wasteful events in history. But ultimately that is what makes honor and glory: sacrifice for the future. The tragedy should not be forgotten in the glory. So when you see this movie, let your heart swell for the glory and honor, and let your eye weep at the waste of human life.
Rating: - History Untold
Not many Americans ever acknowledged the existence of Black soldiers in the Civil war, or World War 2 for that matter. Glory is the true story of how the Black Americans in the 54th Regimen fought for a country that didn't appreciate them. Not enough can be said about this movie. The story is solid, the performances by the actors is excellent. Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and several other black actors give fantastic performances as black men, but all of them very different black men. An escaped slave, a grave digger, and an educated free black man (from the time when blacks were free in Boston). Broderick gives one of his most unique performances to date, setting aside the image of Ferris Bueller to play a young Colonel who trains and prepares the men for combat. His performance is accurate, playing a young but smart and wise Commanding officer who genuinely believes his men are equal soldiers to any other regimen. The movie is powerful, beautiful, frightening and thought provoking. The men who died in this story died for real, and for almost nothing. Their story should be told to everyone, so they can realize that more then just the heroes who wrote history existed. Highly recommended, especially the Special Edition DVD. There are a lot of extras and interviews.
Rating: - One of the best civil war movies ever made.
This movie is a great introduction to the little known fact that African-Americans fought for the Union Army during the Civil War in the 54th Massachusetts regiment. Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, and Carey Elwes give excellent performances. Is this movie historically accurate on every last detail coverning the 54th regiment? No, because this movie is a theatrical production, not a documentary. This a serious movie and it is certainly not a comedic spoof of the 54th regiment. To suggest otherwise by comparing it to a Monty Python movie is sheer intellectual dishonesty. This movie is one of the best civil war movies ever made and the movie won three Oscars. Watch it and enjoy the performances, the excellent camera work, and the moving musical score. Quibbles over isolated historical details doesn't lessen the fine performances of the all of actors, nor change the historical fact that the 54th regiment fought courageously for the Union army. The final scenes showing the 54th regiment's assault on Fort Wagner is one of the best movie endings ever.
