Average Rating: Rating: - the sweetest thing I know I've seen/heard some mixed reviews on this black love story, but all in all people get it and they really feel it...it's nice to see african-americans represent "black love"...Nia Long and Larenz Tate did an excellent job and the accompanying soundtrack is off the chain as well...the movie is all good and like other reviewers have said it didn't get the marketing and publicity that it should have gotten... this movie came out a while back when the "gansta/thug life" movies were coming out and people were flocking to the theaters to see our people get shot up, act up and just act plain ghetto, but that's a whole other story.... Love Jones definitely should be added to your video collection...the movie just keeps it real as far as the characters, the dialogue, and plot...a must have for anyone who loves romance Rating: - Simple yet complex, and utterly refreshing "Love Jones" is a love story that will resonate with college educated African-American Gen-Xers. The "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back" storyline is simple and not new. The complexity comes in the portrayal of heartbreak, fear of commitment, disappointment with relationships (expectations versus real life), indecision, and the triumph of love through making oneself vulnerable-- all against a backdrop of intellectual, multi-faceted young African American professionals who are not the cookie-cutter types most commonly found in movies like "Booty Call". For those of us who were worn out with the portrayals of African Americans as 'hood dwelling gang members on crack, noble, long suffering Southern racism martyrs, or club hopping sex maniacs, this was a refreshing movie. It was one of my favorites for 1997-98, along with "Eve's Bayou" and "Soul Food." Nia Long and Larenz Tate have an on-screen sensuality that floats right off the screen. This is how truly free African American people love. Rating: - "Refreshing" This movie debuted in an era where the gangster and shot-em-up movies were prevalent. It was so refreshing to see a black love story about the ups and downs...joys and sorrows of a relationship. I thought Larenz Tate and Nia Long gave a phenomenal performance. I have watched this movie a zillion times and have not gotten tired of it once. As a matter of fact, after all these years, this movie still has the power to evoke emotion out of me. I still smile when Darius read his poem to Nina the first night they met...I still get angry when Darius hooked up with that chick as soon as Nina left town...I still get tears in my eyes at the end of the movie when Darius tells Nina that the love he feels for her is "urgent like a ..." Need I go on. In my book, this movie is an all time black love story.
